“Old Trees are like old people. They have Character.”
David Stahle, ancient-tree expert

While visiting a friend’s sand mining operation near Lynches River, Steve Lane, Lake City native, became curious about logs being stacked and burned. After questioning the dredge operator, it was found that many of the logs were pulled from forty feet beneath the earth's surface. Lane became suspicious that this was going to be an important find. Taking a portion of a tree stump home, he began to fashion a bread bowl using his home microwave to dry the wood. Those who saw his first bowl could not deny the beauty of the wood with its rich patina and close grain. With the okay from his friend, the University of Georgia was selected to carbon date samples from several logs. Lane’s suspicions were verified, carbon dating showed some of the logs to be approximately 45,000 years old. The wheels began to spin faster as Lane found partners for a very unique business. Lane’s dream is that Ancient Cypress LLC, will save wood for future study as well as market wood to be used in works of art and fine furniture.
